Safety Technology of Turning

Turning is one of the most widely used processes in machine manufacturing industry. The number of lathes and personnel is large. The range of processing is wide and the tools and fixtures used in the process are very various. Thus, the technical problems of safety in turning process is particularly important. Spring products manufacturing requires much turning process. The key work is as follows:

1. Injuries brought by cutting chips and the relevant protective measures

Steel parts processed on lathe are of good toughness and the chips produced in turning in machining process appear to be plastic crimps and their edges are very sharp. When steel parts are in high-speed cutting process, red, hot ground and long scraps are formed, which are easy to hurt workers. And they often wind on the workpieces, turning tools and tool holders, therefore, workers needs to clean them up or break them in time with iron hook. When necessary, workers should stop the lathe to do the cleaning, but absolutely do not use the hand to do so.

In order to prevent chip damage, measures like chip breaking, chip flow control and various protective baffles are often taken. In the process of spring design and manufacturing, there are some good ways to prevent chip damage. Chip breaking is to grind the chip breaking grooves or steps on the turning tool; appropriate chip breakers and mechanical clamping tools are also adopted.

2. Clamping of the workpiece

In turning in machining process, due to improper clamping of the workpieces, many accidents often happen which cause damage to the machine tool, break or smash the tool, and cause injuries because of the falling or flying out of the workpieces. Therefore, in order to ensure the safe production of turning process, special attention must be paid during the clamping of the workpieces.

Appropriate fixtures should be chose for different sizes and shapes of parts, whether it is three-jaw or four-jaw chuck, or special fixture, its connection to the spindle must be stable and reliable. The workpiece must be clamped in tight and right position. To meet the requirement, sleeve can be used to clamp the large work piece to ensure that the workpiece will not shift, fall off, or spin out during the high-speed rotation and turning process. And if necessary, the dead centre and steady rest can be reinforced to enhance the clamping. Remember, the wrench must be removed immediately after clamping.

3. Safe operation

As we provide wire forming service, before working, check the machine thoroughly and do not use it until you confirm that it is in good condition. You also need to confirm that the workpieces and turning tools are clamped tightly in right positions. During the turning in machining process, the machine must stop when you need to change tools, load and unload workpieces, or measure workpieces. While rotating, the workpieces should not be touched by hand or wiped with cotton thread. You need to choose appropriate cutting speed, feed rate and depth of cut. Overload processing is never allowed.

Workpieces, fixtures and other sundries are not allowed to be placed on the head of the lathe, the tool holders or the machine plane. When using a file, move the turning tool to a safe position, with the right hand in front and the left hand in the back to prevent them getting trapped in the machine. Special personnel should be put in charge of the work. Only they can use and maintain the machine tool, and other personnel are not allowed to use them.
